Set in the goldfish bowl of the court of Queen Anne, this is the account of the struggle for influence between the Queen's Favourite, Lady Sarah (Weisz), and the young pretender, Abigail (Stone). Lanthimos takes us into this claustrophobic world of intimacy and intrigue with stark frankness and removes the historical drama from the cosiness of Sunday teatime telly. Olivia Coleman won her Oscar for best actress for her performance as Queen Anne.
