Orlando

Dir Sally Potter UK 1992 94 mins

With Tilda Swinton, Billy Zane, Quentin Crisp, Simon Russell Beale

Virginia Woolf is an author who is regarded as particularly difficult to adapt. Sally Potter masters this consummately with Orlando, the tale of a young man who appears immortal, living through several centuries from the time of the Tudors to the 1920s, changing gender along the way. Bizarre as this may sound, it is an elegant and enchanting study of shifting roles, relationships, and attitudes through the ages. Tilda Swinton, possibly the only actor that could carry this off, is outstanding and memorable.
